Judge blocks Trump administration from halting federal funds to states
US District Judge Arun Subramanian, appointed by former President Joe Biden, issued the order, noting that the states had demonstrated sufficient legal grounds “to protect the status quo” for at least 14 days. The affected states—California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, and New York—receive over $10 billion annually through the Child Care and Development Fund, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, and the Social Services Block Grant.
The Department of Health and Human Services announced the funding pause earlier in the week, citing “reason to believe” that these states were providing benefits to undocumented individuals, but did not provide evidence or explain why only these five states were targeted.
Critics argue the move is politically motivated and aimed at Democratic-run states.
A lawyer from the New York Attorney General’s Office said: “The government’s actions are creating operational chaos.” She added that delays in funding could create uncertainty for families and child care providers. The federal government had requested detailed data, including names and Social Security numbers of benefit recipients dating back to 2022, which state officials contend is unconstitutional and unnecessary, as they already have measures in place to prevent fraud.
